Jan DeAngelo

Jan was born in 1964 in Binghamton New York theseventh of eight children. He began playing piano at the age of 3 and began formal training at age 4. Throughout his school years Jan was called upon to perform or accompany singers in performances ranging from High School musicals to school masses.
He graduated from Binghamton University with a Bachelors in Music with a concentration in piano and a dance minor. He is the only music major to date to have won the Friars Club award from the Theater Department at the university. Given to him in recognition of all the musical theater/dance theater he participated in.
He went on to work/dance for Ballet Binghamton, School of American Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Ballet Arts theater, Cidermill Playhouse, and Chenango River Theater.
Jan is also an accomplished and much sought after Sacred Music Composer.
He began his Sacred music career in 1980 as the organist and children’s music director at St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church in Hillcrest New York at the age of 14. The youngest diocesan employee at the time. After graduating college and getting married Jan was appointed music director of St. James Roman Catholic Church in 1990. The largest parish in the southern region of the Diocese of Syracuse. He directs the cantor, adult choir, and oversees the contemporary ensemble. He has been writing liturgical music since 1996 when he premiered his first work Requiem in honor of the up coming 100th anniversary of the church. He has gone on to write over 25 new works over this period and continues writing at this time. He primarily writes for priest and religious jubilee masses as well as weddings.

Awards:

Jan is the recipient of the Friars Club Award in 1987 and recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Broome County Arts Council in 2012.

  • As Vocal Coach/Instructor

    Jan received his BA in Music in 1988 from Binghamton University. There he studied with acclaimed pianists Walter Ponce and Alice Mitchell. While at Binghamton University he played with the University orchestra. He also played under the baton of Sue Peters, the music director for the theater department, in all of the university main stage shows. Jan was a much in demand classroom pianist for ballet classes at the university as well as in Binghamton ,and Manhattan. He played classes for The School of American Ballet, New Jersey Ballet, Ballet Binghamton, and Ballet Arts Theater.

    Jan studied voice as well. His most prominent teacher being Dodi Protero a member of the voice department at Juliard School of Music. And most recently studied under Jeanie LoVetri at Shenandoah University.

  • As Pianist

    Jan has recorded several piano albums. His most popular Playing the Field is known all over the U.S., Great Britain, Italy, and Greece. He is very comfortable playing in many styles of music.
    Jan is a much sought after vocalist. He has sung all over the U.S., Canada, and Italy. He sings musical theater, cabaret, opera, and pop styles,. His ability to sing in all styles is attributed to his study of Somatic Voicework method. Jan is a board Certified level 2 Instructor of this method.
    He also sings with a jazz vocal group called Swing Street Station. They have sung with the members of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra at the Marriot Marquis in Times Square, as well as on their album, Swing Street Station and Friends at Christmas.
  • Choral Director

    Jan has been conducting choruses since the age of 17. He began his career at St. Catherines Church and then went on to conduct choirs at St. Anthony of Padua Church, at the age of 22. Since 1990 Jan has been the Choral Master at St. James Church in Johnson City. He has prepared choruses in the community as well. For many years he prepared and conducted the chorus for the Binghamton Symphony on Ice Christmas show. He also was asked to prepare and conduct the chorus for the Andy Williams Christmas Show.

    As of 1993, Jan has conducted the award winning Select Chorus of Seton Catholic Central High School. They have performed all over the U.S. They sang on the stage at the Original Grand Ole Oprey in Nashville, Walt Disney World, and in 1994 sang all over Italy and for His Holiness Pope John Paul ll.

  • Music Director

    Jan was the youngest member, and the first music student to musically direct at Cider Mill Playhouse. A professional theater in Endicott New York. Since 1986 Jan has musically directed over 30 shows for the company. He has also worked as the M.D. at the Chenango River Theater in Greene.

    Jan and his wife Shannon started their own theater company : Jan De Angelo and Company. He musically directed shows for this company since 1995. He has also directed for SRO lll. And for Broome Community College Little Theater.   • As Choreographer/Dancer

    Jan began his dance career with Sherry Russo school of dance in Binghamton. From there he went on to minor in dance at Binghamton University where he studied under Laura Teuchtler, Fred Weiss, and Trudy Cobb. He studied ballet with Gilbert Reed, Tina Price, and Gerel Hilding of the Joffrey Ballet.

    He also studied tap with Laura Teuchtler, and former Rockette, Eunice Goundrey.

    Jan suffered an injury early in his career and started dancing in musical theater. He and his wife work with ballroom coach Steve Dougherty. They have danced on the United States American Ballroom Dance Team, and as a couple in variety shows.

    Jan began choreographing shortly after his injury in 1989 putting up small ballets. He than began work as a choreographer for the Cider Mill Playhouse. He has choreographed, Fiddler on the Roof, 1776, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, King and I, Music Man, Oklahoma, Sound of Music, Guys and Dolls, No,No, Nanette, Brigadoon, Anything Goes, Godspell Les Miserable.

  • Circus Techniques

    Jan studied clowning, juggling and physical comedy at Binghamton University under Dick Cuyler. He was also the first student at the Trapeze School of New York. He studied trapeze for 2 years there. He has taught juggling, tumbling, and sword play at Seton Catholic Central High School.
  • As Actor

    Jan Studied acting under Tom Kremer at Binghamton University and with Mrs. Dacre Kapeghian who was a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. He has been an actor at the Cider Mill Playhouse since 1986. Roles include Giles, in The Mousetrap, Sam Craig in Our Town, Benny South street, in Guys and Dolls, LM in Pumpboys and Dinettes. He has also been the Gravedigger, in Hamlet, Bottom, in Mid Summer nights Dream, Cardinal Wolsey in Man for All Seasons and The King in The King And I.
  • As Fitness Instructor

    Jan is a Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (since 2004). He has a special Certification as a Performance Enhancement Specialist, meaning he is capable of working with all types of Athletes. He is a certified Kettlebell Instructor. He spends most of his days working with personal training clients or teaching group.
  • Composer

    Jan is a composer of many styles of music. He has written and performed Requiem, his ballet, Street Car Named Desire, many Italian art songs and numerous sacred and non sacred choral compositions. He writes mostly sacred music for his choir at St. James Catholic Church.
